Town Fiesta Committee Reconvene

The officers and members of this year’s General Steering committee for the celebration of our annual Town Fiesta had their 2nd meeting last October 15, 2003 at the old session hall of our town hall. Present in the said meeting were different school heads, barangay captains, local executives, heads of offices and other civic spirited individuals.

The agenda of the meeting were with regards to the developments of activities and the preparations in the celebration of our annual festivities. Mayor Armando V. Abad presided the assembly. He then asked the different barangay heads if their candidates from the three clusters that were formed could now be known. The barangay captains assured the body that their respective candidates are available when the time comes.

As for the Department of Education and Culture and Sports (DECS) December 27 activities, the different school heads requested the body that the share of the town fiesta committee should be reduced from 30% to 15% so that they could fund the needs of upcoming schools projects. The body reacted on the issue. Retired principal Filomeno Europa cautioned the school heads that before you bargain on such percentage, they should first submit to the town fiesta general steering committee and to the DECS division their planned popularity contest and projects for approval. The mayor further explained to the local DECS heads that as regards to school needs, the municipal government is subsidizing certain amount for the school board, such as classrooms, maintenance, electricity and others. From thereon, school mentors gave only 70% assurance of their cooperation in the celebration of the town fiesta. In addition to this, may I remind the school heads that DECS has a memorandum that solicitations such as popularity contest are prohibited in public schools. This can be possible in this case, if our municipal government could acquire a Department of Social Welfare and Developments (DSWD) permit for the said popularity contest.

Other matters discussed in the meeting were the on-going HARANA Atbp. weekly solo singing contest, in which the chairman, Mrs. Dolores T. Vergara, reported that her committee is smoothly doing well in the presentations as well as in the solicitations of prizes and funds for operational expenses. SK federated chairman, Rosario Vergara, also reported that sports competition would start on October 18 and every weekends thereafter.
